Pretty Little Liars Review: The Big BetrAyal

at . Comments

OMG! Or should I say O...M... A?!?

If you haven't seen the summer finale of Pretty Little Liars, stop reading and watch it right now! I guess it goes without saying, but SPOILERS AHEAD!

"The Lady Killer" was the kind of finale we deserved at the end of last season. It had just the right amount of mystery, suspense and revelations. The episode might have left us scratching our head and contemplating some new questions for the winter season, but it gave us some unprecedented access into the world of A.

A Kiss for Spencer

First off, let's deal with the big reveals! While many of us anticipated some of these events, it was still amazing to watch them unfold onscreen.

Emily was isolated from the start of the episode. From all the press surrounding Garrett's trial and her disagreement with the other liars, it seemed like all these forces united to make her vulnerable. But why on earth would she go to a cabin with Nate?!? Given his odd reaction to their kiss (and the fact that they kissed to begin with), it seems unusual that Emily would turn to him for some alone time in the woods.

Honestly, this was as bad a decision as Spencer's in the last finale. Isolating yourself from your friends and being alone with someone you barely trust (like Nate or Mona) when someone is out to get you is not smart. Naturally, in the spooky remote cabin in the woods, Emily figured out who Nate really is: Linden James, former True North boyfriend of Maya, as well as a creepy stalker and murderer. Were you surprised?

How scary was Nate when he popped out of nowhere? Emily said he scared her half to death. To which he replied: "Not really, but I will." *Chills* His plan to kill Paige as punishment for Emily stealing Maya away didn't come to fruition, but his untimely death did release Garrett from prison finally.

Garrett's release was particularly important because it seems like that was part of A(s)'s plan. Paige was suppose to be set up for Maya's murder, but she never made it to that cemetery. No doubt the girls would have totally believed Paige was guilty since they had already decided that she was A. The plan the As came up with would have worked if not for Nate. So it's up to Mona and ...TOBY!... to figure out how to get Maya's phone back from Paige because they still have a lot of work to do and a lot of evidence to cover up.

That's right, Toby is the other A! Shocked? Angry? Confused? Or some combination of the three?

Some of us might have seen it coming for weeks, but I didn't really want to believe it was possible until I saw this episode. Spencer's reunion with Toby was quite the romantic scene. There was so much attention paid to their love scenes, highlighting the importance of their first time (some may say it wasn't their first time, but it's the first time it's been onscreen) and the love between them, that I couldn't help but feel that she (and we) were being set up for a big betrAyal.

The whole thing was oddly reminiscent of Scream - a girl sleeps with her boyfriend only to find out he's the psycho who's been terrorizing her. This revelation also kind of explains why there hasn't been as much A damage directed towards Spencer.

This big revelation will definitely send most of us running back to the earlier episodes to really pay attention to Toby. The scenes between Mona and Toby were really important because we finally got some insight into A's plans. We know how they intended to set up Paige and why. We just don't understand the motives yet. And we know where A's next target is going to be, the Halloween train.

Oh, and equally shocking but also expected was poor Caleb getting shot. I'm still not sure exactly how it happened (we didn't really get any information about it), but once he brought that gun into the episode, it was evident that trouble was afoot. Coupled with the earlier scenes of a hysterical Hanna made it easy to guess that Caleb would be the victim. I applaud him for trying to protect himself and Hanna, but the gun was not a smart move and leaving it unattended was even more ridiculous.

In the midst of all this exciting drama, Ezra and Aria managed to suck out the suspense in the episode by returning to the Maggie situation. It's not that I don't care about Ezra's love child, but it's really frustrating to watch Aria react to the situation.

When Maggie showed up at Ezra's (an event which our very own Leigh Raines predicted in our Pretty Little Liars Round Table), Aria wasn't worried about the fallout for Ezra but for herself. She doesn't want to get in trouble for having lied in the first place and seeking out Maggie. Maggie is in a very difficult position, but she's not lying for selfish reasons like Aria; she's trying to do what's best for her child. The whole thing made we want to yell, "Grow up, Aria!"

The finale was satisfying, but it did leave us with some big questions:

  • Why did A warn Emily in that cabin?
  • Why do the As care if Garrett is released? Is this for Jenna's benefit? Is Garrett guilty of some other crime?
  • Why would Toby work for the A team?
  • How was Mona able to escape so easily? Where did she get that access card?
  • What's in Maya's bag that's so important?
  • How did Caleb get shot? Did Nate briefly return to life for one last scare or do we dare suspect that Emily might have had something to do with it?

And it looks like we have some great thrills to look forward to with this year's Halloween special. Can't wait for October!

But then again, maybe Paige shot him, from the back? She untied herself, ran up to the lighthouse, saw Emily and Caleb, they saw her, not thinking that she would harm them because she was a victim, then she grabbed the gun, pointing at Nate first they stop and stare at her saying nothing in disbelief and then shot Caleb instead. I don't know why she would do it, but she seems a bit crazy doesn't she? But does anyone know who that person walking outside that cabin was? I can't seem to remember that Nate even opened the door? Or did he just look out the window? Cause it would fit if it was Caleb. Nate didn't see anyone, Emily runs, Nate running after her, Caleb coming inn seeing Page, unties Page (hence why coming after a little while), runs after Nate and Emily, finds Nate and Emily and then Page comes, or doesn't come. It doesn't explain why Paige would shoot Caleb, because he just untied her. Or maybe she shot him because he was comforting Emily and it seemed like something else, and something snapped inside her head. Again, she seems a bit cray-cray. Wow, anyways, good to just let it out I guess.

Leading to something else, what happened to Caleb, I knew something bad would happen bringing that gun, I was even afraid that he would shoot himself in the back when he put it in the backpack, (but that's just me being paranoid as always). I did ponder that maybe Emily could have done it, because I can't see how Nate would ever have time to get up and shoot the guy while Emily being comforted by Caleb and having her back against Nate. We would have heard a sound of struggle, because he would have to move Emily away from Caleb and then shoot him. So making Emily left to shoot Caleb. I mean, it wouldn't seem right because why would Emily do it?
Maybe A texted her, but she didn't have any network and when she did have network Nate came and smashed the phone with his foot. Then I went back to the only time A had made contact with Emily being away and that's calling to say that she has to get out of the cabin. That was the only thing A said to her. This means A had found out that Nate was bad (because A has ears and eyes everywhere and Paige didn't show up) and A didn't want to lose Emily, not because A likes her, but because A likes to "play" with her. So when Emily sort of cleared Garrets's name, didn't it make them even and not that A owes Emily? Unless, Emily didn't just clear Garret's name, but shot Caleb, and that's an advantage for the A. But honestly I can't see why Emily could have shot Caleb or when (if even influenced by the A)? Because we see Caleb comfort her and then bam. We would at least hear Caleb say something like; "Emily what are you doing? No!" So, I say that I'm excited to hear how he got shot and good riddance.

Just saw this episode and I were on my feet nearly the whole time because of the anticipation.
What really made me unhinge my jaw was the reveal of TOBY being the other A. I really didn't see THAT one coming! I mean, literally,UNHINGED. I mean I almost never do anything or say anything when I watch tv or movies, but THIS. I MEAN, WOW, good job PLL. The reason it took so long to watch this episode is because I took a break from PLL in the beginning of the season because it bored me a bit. And earlier today I decided to watch the rest of the season and it grew a bit more exciting, but THIS. I mean, seriously, THIS, I actually got tears in my eyes and started to laugh a nervous laughter because I was so in to it. Again, WOW and WHAT?! Wow, wow, I just wow, yeah.. Wow, Toby huh? Wow, impressed. Please keep it this exciting at all the times I. Marlene King I mean, keep us on edge at ALL TIMES. Really. Wow, I don't think I will be done processing this in about a million years or so.
Just wow.

I have 1 question that no 1 asked......... Does any 1 thinks that Allison is really dead?

when I saw the episode and Toby turned, I was like ... it can not be A, he is so sweet, and he loves Spencer. I think he just joined the A-team because he want to help Hanna, Spencer, Emily and Aria. That's what I think (and hope I'm right because I really like Spoby :)).

My last comment didn't show the whole thing... But did anyone think that the person with the mask that Hanna ran in to looked exactly like Ali on the Halloween train!!!!

Well I agree with some of you others that Toby is only doing this so he can learn more about A and stuff. hes not that terrible of a person that he would really want to hurt the girls. Also, there's obviously still another A because at the end the A was buying those tickets and we already know about Mona and Toby so they would've shown A.. But they didn't so there's obviously still another A (which I think is Alison). But another question I have is.. Is that room where A always is like still at the creepy motel? And what was that call to Emily talking about at the hospital? Now, I think Caleb got shot either by the gun malfunctioning and randomly shooting or Nate/Lindon grabbed it and shot. Cuz Emily and Caleb aren't blind and they would've seen if A came up there. But now why was Garrett let out of jail?? We know that he wasn't mayas killer but isn't he still being accused of killing Ali? Lastly, just a random thing I noticed but while watching the new Halloween promo.. Did anyone else think that person with the mask that Hanna ran in to look exactly like Ali??!!!

I actually like Toby being a part of the A first he was a shady character, then he got woven into a good-guy storyline and we all forgot the beginning. I hope they don't do a cop-out with him being a double agent. What if everything he told the girls about Jenna, is actually the other way around?

Ava mila

When Jenna warned Emily she meant Nate. Because he threatened her before and because he knew that Jenna saw him with Maya since she wasn't blind. Marlene said herself that Jenna took off because of Nate. What I don't get now is:
-Was Jenna EVER blind? I thought she was and the surgery brought back her sight but in wiki it says that in season 3 the girls found out Jenna was never blind. When was that? How do they know she could see the whole time?
Why would she say then in the season 2 finale to someone: ''It's so good to finally see you''. -How was Toby' s tattoo in season 1 explained? The one with the date of Alison's death. And where is it now? Shirtless Toby never has it.

I still think Paige is part of the A team.she has some secrets and Emily too blind to see. What did Jenna mean in the previous episode when she told Emily to watch who She spend so much time with. Paige probably warned Emily to get out the house! Toby looks so scary tho.
