When Charlie continues to spend exorbitant amounts of money on Courtney (Jenny McCarthy) in front of Alan and Lyndsey, the poor little guy starts to feel bad.  When Alan can't afford to buy Lyndsey a birthday present, he picks up some extra work at the mall but is only able to raise enough to buy a fake pearl necklace.  He then goes and steals back some diamond earrings he once bough for Judith.  He plans to return them, but ends up giving them to Lyndsey.  They end up running into Judith and Herb, but dodge her from seeing.
