Supernatural Season 13 Episode 8 Review: The Scorpion and the Frog

After thirteen seasons, Supernatural did something it has never done before -- take part in a modern-day heist.
It certainly grabbed my attention having Supernatural Season 13 Episode 8, open with a very strategic left happening while having a demon named Barthamus make a cryptic phone call to the guys providing them with a possible way to find Jack.
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate Dean's reasoning for not wanting to make a deal with Barthamus?
Alright, well, I've seen this movie almost a thousand times. Some asshat who's too fancy to get his hands dirty, plans a job, swears it'll go smooth, and it does until BANG, and than everything goes screaming off the rails and it's our asses.

This is what always gets me with the guys, and probably why I personally yell at my screen almost weekly; they always do things they probably shouldn't even after they lay out all the reasons why it's a bad idea. If it sounds too good to be true, it's probably not a good idea.
It was marvelous having the old Dean back. While I understood he was mourning the loss of his mother and Cas, I'm not sure I would have been able to handle a moody Dean for the entire season. His banter with Smash and Grab was extremely comical, but it was a riot when he was turned into a human compass.
Jensen's physical comedy was phenomenal. One can only hope they give him more fun things to do this season -- in between saving the world of course.
Moving on, not only was tonight's episode fun, but it genuinely reminded me of some of the classic episodes of Supernatural.
It was a genius idea billing Luther as the villain and then turning the tables and giving him a more sympathetic storyline. Who else was surprised to learn Luther had made a deal with Barthamus to save his son? It made total sense why Luther would want to go after all the demons after his son ended up drowning.
He also made a great point to Sam and Dean, they both on the wrong side of this. Instead of looking at the case with all the facts provided, they jumped right in because they're so desperate to find a lead on Jack.
I know, I know, they're willing to go to great lengths to find Jack including making deals with demons. We've been down this road before, and it never goes well for the guys even to pretend to play nice with said demons. They could have come up with another way to get their hands on the other part of the spell.
It didn't make a whole lot of sense when Dean seemed surprised Barthamus would let Luther's son die.
He's a crossroads demon -- of course, he's not going to have sympathy when it comes to the people he contracted with. Everyone and their mother has told you not to trust demons, but yet the guys continue to make these terrible deals.
Of course, I wasn't shocked to learn Luther had Barthamus's bones in the case, but I did enjoy the moment when Dean let Alice be the one to burn his bones; though it was a tad disappointing seeing Barthamus leave so soon. He would have made the perfect Crowley replacement.
On a completely different note, who else was missing Cas?
When it was understandable why he wasn't there to help the guys, it would have been wonderful to see him take part in some of the action of the heist. Could you imagine his reaction to Dean turning into a compass? Fingers crossed he'll be able to take part in some future Winchester antics.
In the end, it was another exciting hour. The spark is certainly still there between the guys, and even when it's just the two of them out there saving the world, it's still a lot of fun to watch.
