Insecure Season 3 Episode 5 Review: High-Like

On Insecure Season 3 Episode 5, Issa's responsibilities are taken to a whole new level after she and her friends go to Coachella, but nothing goes according to plan.

Issa is currently dealing with the fallout from quitting We Got Y'all, but we get a bit of a buffer episode before we have to actually confront it all.

Checking Things Out - Insecure Season 3 Episode 5

Coachella is particularly culturally relevant, so it's great to see our everyday heroes go to Coachella and get into their own kind of trouble -- however, it goes a bit far.

Insecure takes the tenderness of the new Nathan/Issa relationship to a new level, choosing to skip the unusually excessive exposition from the last episode and condense it into a perfect mix of parts, including sex on the ferris wheel and the poolside antics.

Beyoncé is a better mother than me! This closet is so well organized!

Tiffany [crying]

It's a great combination of scenes that really captures the essence of Insecure along with the absolutely hysterical moments with the rest of the girls.

The scene in the Airbnb -- when Tiffany is sobbing over eating a weed brownie while pregnant, Kelli is still very high after getting tazed, and Molly is freaking out over her brief -- is probably one of Insecure's best in terms of comedic value.

I GOT TOO MUCH SLEEP LAST NIGHT! GET THE FUCK UP! BEYONCÉ OR BUST, BITCHES!

Issa [smashing pans together]

It's utterly brilliant and completely encapsulates what Issa has to deal with in terms of adulthood and still being a loyal friend to her girls. It's an unusually wholesome moment that still retains its humor.

A Mess - Insecure Season 3 Episode 5

When the news was revealed that Lawrence wasn't coming back, I took that to heart! It was truly shocking to see Lawrence reappear, especially that Lawrence and Daniel were both out of the picture.

I was starting to warm up a bit to Nathan as well, now that Issa seems to really like him. It was a quick couple episodes, but they do seem to have chemistry as well as a shared background and goals.

I'm not really sure where the show is going to go from here in terms of Lawrence's storyline, other than throwing a wrench in Nathan's narrative (although that's a very good reason to add him back in).

Molly on Molly - Insecure Season 3 Episode 5

However, it does still seem like a bit of a waste to just dispose of Daniel and bring back Lawrence. Nathan is a great addition, but he doesn't seem like that much of an addition.

For Lawrence fans, it was just a tiny moment but ultimately a highly influential moment. The two-season Lawrence storyline, Issa having dated him for five years, was so well-crafted that even his mere presence brings back plenty of feelings.

Okay. Don’t be mad. I thought we going straight to Coachella when we got here, so I took a edible.

Kelli

Molly's storyline is still complicated but gets marred by Issa's story, but the Coachella plot was done so well that it's easy to forgive the writers for leaving Molly mostly out of the picture.

I'm Molly, and I'm on molly, so that means I'm Molly-squared!

Molly

High as a Kite - Insecure Season 3 Episode 5

However, she has still gotten mostly the short end of the stick when it comes to actual plot, especially now that she's been unhappy at her new law firm for quite a few episodes.

Kelli and Tiffany's functions are still somewhat unclear, although Tiffany's role as a pregnant woman is interesting. Kelli is still somewhat the butt of many jokes, which is funny but not particularly insightful.

Issa

However, the group scenes with the four of them are always particularly funny and create a fun dynamic in which Issa usually has to act like the adult -- in this case, she has to deal with all of their messes at Coachella.

Pool Party - Insecure Season 3 Episode 5

Kelli's fight with the white woman at Coachella ultimately served as a huge anchor in terms of comedic development, but also served as a small indicator of racial bias as Insecure always very subtly points out.

Kelli was kicked out of Coachella even though the white woman also fought and fought back. It's tough to say whether the show wanted to emphasize that point or whether the show wanted to emphasize the absurdity of the situation.

With only three episodes left, it's also tough to say where the show is going to go from here. The show was just renewed, so a continued Lawrence storyline is always a potential even though the third season was completed.

A Weekend To Celebrate - Insecure

It'll be great to see where the show and characters bounce off to after this stellar episode of humorous content and poignant emotion -- that is, as much as it can get, Coachella style.
