Venture Brothers Review: "The Revenge Society"

Last night, The Venture Bros. brought back several untied loose ends from season three and packed them all into an amazing half hour of television.  Questions such as what happened to Phantom Limb and the ORB were answered and you can find out how in our "The Revenge Society" recap.

The Guild Arrives

We're just here to give you some thoughts about the episode in our review:

  • We wonder how Brock would have handled things when the Guild showed up.  Unlike Sgt. Hatred's hilarious antics with Hank, we're pretty sure he would have laid low and out of their way like he did during the "Trial of the Monarch."  So for once... we're almost kind of glad to have Hatred.  Almost.
  • How hilarious was the flashback to Phantom Limb's grandfather?  We loved the council men were a bunch of kidnapped musicians including Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Eno.  Sure makes David Bowie as the sovereign make a little more sense.
  • How fitting was the ORB actually being broken to the recurring theme of failure in The Venture Bros?
  • We were so glad to see the Phantom Limb back as Revenge but couldn't believe just how much the man has aged or how crazy he became.  He was the most competent villain in the past and we hope to see more of him.
  • So glad we at least got a Dr. Girlfriend cameo, but we could have gone for some Monarch in there!
  • Where was Dr. Orpheus when the Venture Compound got raided by the entire state of Rhode Island?  We need us some magic!
  • We love how much Dr. Venture and Dean have bonded over the last several episodes.  Hank was always more of his bodyguard's kid anyways.
  • Poor, poor Billy.  When will the Venture Bros. lay off the pedophile humor.

All in all, we would say this was one of the best episodes of the season.  We have some of our favorite Venture Brothers quotes after the jump, most of which belong to Guild councilmen Red Mantle and Dragoon.

Venture Brothers Preview: "The Revenge Society"

Just when we were wondering if we'd ever hear from Phantom Limb again on The Venture Bros.(other than his brief, post-credit revenge against Manotaur), we saw the most amazing promo after last week's episode, "Return to Malice."

In the upcoming episode, "The Revenge Society," Phantom Limb returns under a new name and tries to exact revenge against The Guild of Calamitous Intent.  Meanwhile, the Guild tries to invade the Venture Compound and Sgt. Hatred and Hank team up to stop them.

Just watch the following promo in case you missed it, or like us, you're just obsessed with show and want to watch it a few more times.

Venture Brothers Review: "Return to Malice"

This week's episode of The Venture Bros. wasn't as heavy on the laughs as the last couple weeks, but it came in extra strong on the character development.  And hey, how can you not love any episode that centers around the Monarch and his henchmen?

Monarch

During the episode, Henchmen 21 kidnaps Hank and Dean, and immediately Sgt Hatred and Dr. Venture assume the Monarch is behind it.  They return to Hatred's old neighborhood, Malice, where they run into his ex-wife.  You can read all about it in our "Return to Malice" recap.

Now for some of our favorite parts of the episode:

  • Henchman 21's backstory from after 24's death to the present, only then releazing it was his cowardice that was responsible.
  • Someone finally revealing why the Monarch is in charge... only he has enough hate
  • We love the concept of Malice and are so glad to return to it!
  • Hehe, the return of Sgt. Hatred's full body tattoo and inappropriate placement of the D.
  • Anyone else reminded of Dr. Henry Killinger when they saw 21 whipping the cacoon into shape?

Of course, we'll do our weekly complaint over the lack of Brock.  When are we going to explore the SPHINX organization more?

The Venture Bros. Review: "Perchance to Dean"

This week's episode of The Venture Bros. had slightly more back story than last week's, but was still an episode presented purely for entertainment.

Dean Rides the Dragon

So far we love where season four is going.  This episode had plenty of throwbacks, including the obnoxious possible illegitimate son of Brock, Dermott, while slowly revealing more about the Venture universe.  Season three was a little too heavy on backstory without all the entertainment this season has brought.

Unfortunately, we had another episode with almost no Brock, but Sgt. Hatred has done as good of a job as anyone could with such enormous shoes to fill.  This episode Brock was featured in a cool flashback, but didn't even say a word.

Our favorite part of this episode were the seemingly unrelated plotlines all come together and exploding in the end.  Plus we love any episode that involves the cops or any other normal part of civilization interacting with the bizarre world of The Venture Bros.

Catch up on any events you may have missed in our detailed recap of "Perchance to Dean."

Venture Brothers Review: "Handsome Ransom"

After last week's heavy story line-based plot of last week, we were treated to just a fun half hour of pure awesomness on last night's episode of The Venture Bros.  We saw the return of The Monarch as he held Hank and Dean for ransom.  Now without their safety net(s) of clones and Brock, Venture actually had to entertain this loon!

The episode really got amazing when Captain Sunshine, voiced by cartoon Batman himself, Kevin Conroy, broke into the cocoon and stole Hank from the Monarch.  Apparently he's had a grudge with the Monarch since he killed his previous ward, Wonder Boy.

Captain Sunshine and Hank

Catch up with the details of the episode in our "Handsome Ransom" recap.  Now sit back and let us tell you why we thought this episode was so awesome:

  • The Monarch is back!  He's easily the most entertaining character of any show
  • Dr. Girlfriend proved her Doctor title is legit unlike Rusty's when she busted out some science
  • Henchman 21 put on some muscle and even threw a punch!
  • Tee Hee, Sgt Hatred got pretty excited when he found out Billy was not actually a kid.  You mean it wouldn't be illegal if...
  • All the amazing Batman references while Sunshine was being voiced by Conroy

Only things we didn't like about the episode:

  • Lack of Brock
  • Hmm, does an episode really need two pedophiles?  Possibly a third if you count Scorpio?

Venture Brothers Season One Quotes

The Venture Bros. debuted on Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network back in 2003 with its pilot, "The Terrible Secret of Turtle Bay."  Almost a year and a half later, the show debuted with its incredible first season.

Venture Brothers Poster

When you go back and watch the first season, as we've done way too many times, it's impressive just how much of the Venture universe the creators had already penned out and alluded to that early.

The first season was also responsible for some of the funniest moments in the series history.  We've compiled the ultimate collection of Venture Brothers quotes from the first season.

Here's a highlight of some of our favorites:

Mexican University Administrator: ...your check, Dr. Venture. Muchas gracias.
Dr. Venture: Super good! Very generous of y-oh, pesos. Great. These zeros are all meaningless | permalink
Summers: True, I was barely alive after my test ship broke up. But the Army saved me. It spent $6 million dollars to give me all-new bionic parts. Made me stronger, better, faster then I was. And you know what they did? They put me to work! They expected me to pay it all back! Do you know how long $6 million bucks takes to pay off on a government salary?!? | permalink
The Monarch: Venture and I have been engaged in a deadly game of cat and also-cat for years! | permalink
Dean: But Pop...
Hank: What are you, on the rag?
Dr. Venture: It's impossible for me to be on the rag, I'm . . . I can't believe I'm even arguing with you about this. What men's room did you pick up that kind of trash talk up in? | permalink
Dr. Orpheus: I am known to men as Dr. Orpheus. And mine is to conceive and control the delicate arrangement of the cosmos!
Dr. Venture: They give out PhD.'s for that?
Dr. Orpheus: Junior college upstate, communications major and minor in women's studies | permalink
Dr. Venture: Dean what the hell are you doing in there? I need to take a shower!
Dean: I'm practicing being a boyfriend, Pop!
Dr. Venture: Never mind, Dean! | permalink
Dr. Orpheus: Do you have a pen, Hank?
Hank: To use as a magic wand?
Dr. Orpheus: To use..as a pen, Hank | permalink
O.S.I. Instructor: Well, let's see here, Mr. Samson. On the driving portion, you totalled every car but the one you were driving; on the pistol range, you refused to use a gun. And, uh, oh. Hah! Yeah, here's my favorite: on the written, you drew a little guy with wings from the Led Zeppelin records.
Brock: Icarus. So uh... what are you trying to tell me here, little man? That you don't like Zep? | permalink
Dr. Venture: My good looks are going down the toilet faster than an unwanted pregnancy on prom night | permalink
Henchman 24: Come on! They have one female servicing a large group of males. That implies a species that lays eggs.
Henchman 21: Oh my God, you're crazy! They're so obviously mammals!
Henchman 24: Please! She'd be in estrus 24/7 if she didn't lay eggs.
Henchman 21: Smurfs don't lay eggs! I won't tell you this again! Papa Smurf has a f**king beard! They're mammals | permalink
Hank: Hey, I had to sleep in my clothes. Now I feel gross wearing them two days in a row!
Monarch: You're kidding me, right? That's the only outfit I've never seen you in!
Hank: Well that doesn't mean I never wash it.
Monarch: Fair enough | permalink
Monarch: I'm not going to flush. Let them see the wrath of the Monarch! | permalink
Dr. Orpheus: Hug me!
Monarch: Fine. Whatever gets you off, man. Just don't go for the reach-around, because the Monarch doesn't swing that way. | permalink

Coming to Venture Brothers: Nikki Nightgown

Last night was the season four premiere of The Venture Bros, and already the season four spoilers are beginning.  Illustrator Rick Lacy recently revealed on his blog some concept art for a new female lead on Venture Brothers.

According to the cryptic file names he used, the character's name will be Nikki Nightgown and she'll be in her thirties and apparently taller than Dean.  I know, we're master detectives on the case for you.

Just click to enlarge any of the following concept art and then sound off in the comments for your ideas of who Nikki will be.  Good guy?  Bad guy?

Venture Brothers Season Four Premiere Review

Now that's what I call a season premiere!  The Venture Bros. came back with style last night as the major storylines were told out of chronological order.

At the Venture compound, Nazis kidnapped Dr. Venture, while Hank and Dean tried to adjust to life with their new bodyguard, Sgt Hatred, who, combined with Dr. Orpheus eventually helped the boys rescue their father.

The Nazis and the Doctor

Meanwhile, we meet up with Brock Samson shortly after the explosion of the Monarch mobile and we see his transition from being saved by OSI to becoming a member of an organization known as SPHINX.

You can catch up with the complete events of the episode in correct chronological order in our "Blood of the Father, Heart of Steel" recap.

Along the way we were treated to almost all the aspects that makes The Venture Bros. so amazing, well except for maybe the Monarch.  Definitely could have gone for more Monarch than just the flashback at the start.
