Sleepy Hollow is a retelling of the classic tale. It focuses on mysterious events in the titular town.

Lt. Abbie Mills (Nichole Beharie) is an African American police lieutenant working with the Sleepy Hollow Sheriff's Department when Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) returns from the dead, a death he suffered during the American Revolution after he decided to fight on behalf of the Americans rather than with his own British army.

The Headless Horseman became so at the swipe of Ichabod's sword. Ichabod did not know that the body beneath the helmet was that of his best friend, a man who coveted is wife, Katrina. That ushered in the first horse of the apocalypse.

Abbie and Ichabod discover they are witnesses to ward of the coming apocalypse and that they, although born generations apart and from completely different environments, have a long, intertwining family history. Abbie's great great aunt was present for the birth of Ichabod's only son (a son he never knew was coming or born) and attempted to raise him when Icabod's wife Katrina was whisked away from accusations that she was a witch.

When Ichabod learns Katrina was a witch he also discovers that she's still able to communicate from purgatory. Learning that he had a child is utterly devastating to him. Through a series of clues and then a proclamation from a man named Henry, Ichabod learns that his son was buried by witches to contain his tremendous power and keep him from harming the world. That son is also one of the horsemen of the apocalypse: WAR. As WAR he found the witnesses, and thus his father, and began to aid them when his true intent was to usher in the apocalypse to punish the world for its many sins.
